About Lindi Region
In 1961 when Tanganyika gained its independence from the British the Lindi region was completely absent from the map. Present at the time was the Southern State which included the present Lindi Mtwara and Ruvuma Regions. The Southern Headquarters was located in the City of Lindi.
The status of the City of Lindi as Headquarters ended immediately after Independence where the Southern Province became known as Mtwara Region. The headquarters became Mtwara. It is likely that Mtwara Region was too large for the area even the first Mtwara Regional Commissioner John Nzunda was saying:
"I control a piece of land from the Indian Ocean Coast to Lake Nyasa and from the Ruvuma River to the river Rufiji."
The first phase government led by Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere divided the Mtwara region in the early years of Independence with the regions of Mtwara and Ruvuma. This division made Lindi into Mtwara.
